THERAPY FOR OPEN RELATIONSHIPS
A place to build an agreement you both actually chose
OPEN RELATIONSHIP AND NON-MONOGAMY THERAPIST
JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST
Therapy for couples thinking about opening their relationship, couples who already have, and couples where one partner wants it and the other doesn’t. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex and couples therapist, and I work online across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.
I don’t think monogamy is the healthy default, and I don’t think openness is the enlightened one. Either can be a way of growing up together or a way of avoiding each other. What I look at is whether your agreement is something you both actually chose, and whether you can each tolerate the feelings it brings up. That capacity, more than the rules, is what makes any structure work.
What I work with: deciding whether to open, negotiating agreements you can both live with, jealousy and insecurity, a partner who fell for someone else, rules that keep getting broken, closing a relationship again, and the particular ways gay and queer couples tend to navigate openness.
I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.
WHAT CLIENTS BRING IN:
ONE OF US WANTS THIS
One partner has raised it, and the other is scared of what it means. We slow it down so the question can be explored without either of you being steamrolled or shut down.
THE RULES KEEP GETTING BROKEN
When agreements keep failing, the problem is usually that they were never truly mutual, or that they're doing a job no rule can do. We rebuild them from what each of you actually needs.
WE OPENED UP AND IT'S HARDER THAN WE THOUGHT
The agreement looked fine on paper. Then jealousy, secrecy, or someone catching feelings made it real. We look at what the difficulty is telling you, not just how to patch the rules.
CLOSING IT AGAIN
Sometimes openness has run its course. Returning to monogamy can bring its own grief and resentment, and it deserves as much care as opening did.
Your Questions, Answered.
What to expect when you start working on this.
HOW THERAPY WORKS
Will you tell us whether to open our relationship?
No. I’ll help you both get honest about what you want and why, and about what you’re afraid of. The decision stays yours.
Do you see the other people involved?
My work is with you as a couple. Occasionally it helps to understand how other partners fit, but I don’t see them in sessions.
Is jealousy a sign it won't work?
Not necessarily. Jealousy is information, not a verdict. What matters is whether you can talk about it without it running the relationship.
Is This For Me?
Are you judgmental about non-monogamy?
No. I work with open, monogamous, and in-between couples, gay and straight. There’s very little you could tell me that would surprise me.
We're a gay couple. Is this different for us?
Often, yes. Openness has a longer and more visible history among gay men, and it comes with its own expectations and pressures. As a gay therapist I know that landscape well.
My partner doesn't want to come.
We can start with you alone and look at what you want and how to raise it. Couples work usually goes further once both of you are in the room.
Where I work
NYC and all of New York State, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Florida. All sessions online.
