INDIVIDUAL THERAPIST IN NYC

JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST

Individual therapy for the parts of your life that are hardest to talk about. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex and couples therapist based in New York City, and I work online with adults across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida. Much of my individual practice is with gay and straight men working on sex, relationships, and the patterns that connect them.

Most people come in hoping to have a problem solved. What usually helps more is building the capacity the problem is asking for: getting through a difficult conversation without shutting down, wanting something and saying so, staying steady when someone you love is disappointed in you. I draw on emotionally focused, schema, psychodynamic, and acceptance-based approaches, and I tell you what I notice as we go.

What I help with: erectile difficulties, desire, and performance anxiety; porn, hookups, or sexual behavior that feels out of your control; relationship patterns that repeat from one partner to the next; a partner who won’t come to therapy; being gay, bi, or questioning, including within a marriage; Jewish identity and the loss of community after antisemitism; and the shame and self-criticism that follow people from one relationship into the next.

I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.

WHAT CLIENTS BRING IN:

SEX AND PERFORMANCE

Erections, desire, or anxiety that shows up in bed and nowhere else. As a certified sex therapist, I treat these directly rather than referring them out, and individual work is often the most efficient place to start.

SEXUAL BEHAVIOR YOU WANT TO CHANGE

Porn, apps, or hookups that don't fit the life you want. I work from the out-of-control sexual behavior model, which starts from your own values rather than a prescribed set of rules.

THE SAME RELATIONSHIP, AGAIN

Different partners, familiar ending. We look at who you're drawn to, what you tolerate for too long, and what you do when closeness starts to feel risky.

IDENTITY AND BELONGING

Being gay, bi, or questioning, coming out later in life, or never quite fitting the community you were raised in. Questions like these shape how people love and connect, and they belong in the room.

Your Questions, Answered.

Everything you need to know about starting individual therapy with me.

HOW THERAPY WORKS

Integrative. I draw on emotionally focused therapy, schema therapy, psychodynamic work, and acceptance and commitment therapy, depending on what you’re working on. In practice, that means we look at current patterns and where they came from, and I share what I’m noticing along the way.

Most clients meet weekly. Focused concerns such as performance anxiety often improve within a few months; long-standing relational patterns take more time. We’ll review progress together regularly.

For most concerns, research finds comparable outcomes. Many clients also find it easier to talk about sex and relationships from their own home.

Is This For Me?

No. A large part of my individual practice is with men, gay and straight, but I work with adults of all genders.

We can talk that through in the consultation. Some people benefit from individual work first, some from couples therapy, and some from both.

No. I’m out-of-network. Sessions are $200, and I provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement. Check your benefits in about a minute.

Where I work
