SEX THERAPIST FOR PEOPLE RAISED IN RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES
JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST
Therapy for people who grew up with sex surrounded by silence, rules, or fear, and who are finding that it still shapes their sex life, their relationships, or how they feel about their own desires. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex therapist, and I work online across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.
I’m not here to pull anyone away from their faith, and I’m not here to defend the teachings that hurt you. Some clients are still observant and want a sex life that fits their values. Some have left their community and are still carrying its voice. Some are somewhere in between. We work on separating what you actually believe from the shame you absorbed, so your choices about sex become your own.
What I work with: guilt or anxiety during or after sex, difficulty feeling desire or pleasure, couples who married with little sexual knowledge, sexual behavior that conflicts with your values, being gay or bi in a religious family or community, and leaving or changing your relationship to religion. I work with people from Orthodox and other Jewish backgrounds, as well as Christian, Muslim, and other traditions.
I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.
WHAT CLIENTS BRING IN:
SEX STILL FEELS WRONG
You're married, or an adult, or long past the rules you grew up with, and your body hasn't caught up. Guilt shows up exactly when you want to feel close.
GAY IN A RELIGIOUS WORLD
You may have spent years hiding, praying it away, or choosing between your family and yourself. As a gay Jewish therapist, I know how much is at stake, and I never offer anything resembling conversion therapy.
WE MARRIED KNOWING ALMOST NOTHING
Some couples from observant communities start married life with very little sexual education. Pain, anxiety, or disappointment can follow. It isn't too late to learn together.
MY BEHAVIOR CONFLICTS WITH MY VALUES
Sometimes porn or other behavior feels out of control mainly because it clashes with what you believe. That conflict deserves careful attention, without shaming you further.
Your Questions, Answered.
What to expect when you start working on this.
HOW THERAPY WORKS
Will you try to change my religious beliefs?
No. Your beliefs are yours. We work on the shame and fear, not on your faith.
Can you consult with my rabbi or clergy?
If you’d like me to and give written permission, yes. Many clients prefer to keep therapy separate, and that’s fine too.
Do you understand religious law and customs?
I know the Jewish world well. For other traditions, I’ll ask you to teach me what matters, and I’ll take it seriously.
Is This For Me?
I've left religion. Is this still for me?
Yes. Leaving a community doesn’t mean its messages leave you. It’s common to feel the effects years after you’ve stopped practicing.
My spouse is more observant than I am.
That’s common and workable. Couples sessions can help you build a sexual life that respects both of you.
Is sex therapy even allowed in my community?
More observant people see sex therapists than you might expect, often quietly. Sessions are private and online, and nothing is billed to insurance unless you choose to submit a superbill yourself.
Where I work
NYC and all of New York State, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Florida. All sessions online.
