THERAPIST FOR COUPLES DIVIDED BY POLITICS, RELIGION, OR WORLDVIEW

JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST

Couples therapy for partners who love each other and see the world very differently: politically, religiously, family, and community. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex and couples therapist, and I work online across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.

I don’t take sides, and I won’t try to bring either of you around. The goal isn’t agreement. It’s being able to disagree without the relationship becoming the battlefield: to stay curious about someone whose views upset you, and to hold your own ground without needing them to give up theirs. That capacity tends to carry into the rest of the relationship too.

What I work with: couples on opposite sides politically, one partner becoming more or less religious, disagreements over how to raise children, tension with each other’s families or communities, and the loneliness of feeling your partner doesn’t see what you see.

I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.

WHAT CLIENTS BRING IN:

WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE NEWS

Every headline turns into a fight, so you've stopped talking about anything that matters. We rebuild the ability to have those conversations without them costing you each other.

OUR FAMILIES TAKE SIDES

Holidays, group chats, and family dinners have become minefields, and you feel caught between your partner and the people you come from. We work on protecting your relationship without cutting everyone else off.

ONE OF US CHANGED

One of you became more observant, less observant, more political, or less. It can feel like you married a different person. We make room for both the change and the grief.

HOW WILL WE RAISE OUR KIDS?

Values become concrete when there are children: school, religion, what gets said at the dinner table. We work toward decisions you can both stand behind.

Your Questions, Answered.

HOW THERAPY WORKS

No. My role is to protect the relationship, not referee the argument. You’ll each be heard fully.

Of course. They stay out of the room. What matters there is your views and how you hold them together.

Many do. In my work, how a couple disagrees matters more than how much.

Is This For Me?

Avoidance can be as costly as fighting. It often leaves both partners lonely. We can work on that too.

Whatever my own views, my job is to keep the room fair to both of you. I’ll check in with each of you along the way on whether it feels that way.

No. I work with couples from across the political spectrum, and with partners who agree on politics but differ in faith or values.

Where I work

NYC and all of New York State, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Florida. All sessions online.
