JEWISH THERAPIST FOR INDIVIDUALS AND COUPLES
JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST
Therapy with a clinician who understands Jewish life from the inside. I’m a Jewish therapist, a licensed clinical social worker, and an AASECT-certified sex therapist. I trained at Yeshiva University and Tel Aviv University, practiced in Israel for several years, and now work online with Jewish clients across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.
The past few years have asked a great deal of Jewish people. Friendships ended. Workplaces and campuses became hostile in ways that are hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t experienced it. Families divided over subjects that used to sit quietly in the background. Many of my clients have spent a long time being careful about what they say, and therapy should be one place where that isn’t necessary.
What I help with: isolation and loss of community after antisemitism, strain in families and friendships, questions of observance and identity, leaving or returning to religious life, interfaith and mixed-observance relationships, pressure around dating and marriage, and sexual shame shaped by a religious upbringing. I see individuals and couples across the spectrum, from secular to observant.
I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.
WHAT JEWISH CLIENTS BRING IN:
FRIENDSHIPS THAT DIDN'T SURVIVE
People you trusted went quiet, or said something you haven't been able to forget. The loss of friendships and community deserves to be grieved, even when the people around you don't recognize it as a loss.
SEX AND A RELIGIOUS UPBRINGING
Years of messages about what is permitted and what is shameful don't disappear at the chuppah. If you're observant, I'll work within your framework rather than around it.
BETWEEN OBSERVANT AND NOT
More observant than your spouse, less observant than your parents, or somewhere your family hasn't quite accepted. I don't have a stake in where you land.
PARTNERS WHO SEE IT DIFFERENTLY
Interfaith and mixed-observance couples, or two Jewish partners who disagree about Israel, schooling, or kashrut. Differences like these are workable once a couple has a way to talk about them, and that is what we build.
Your Questions, Answered.
Everything you need to know about starting therapy with me.
HOW THERAPY WORKS
Do you work with Orthodox and Haredi clients?
Yes, as well as secular, Reform, Conservative, formerly observant, and newly observant clients. I’ll ask about your practice rather than assume it, and I won’t treat your observance as the problem.
Do I have to talk about Israel?
Only if you want to. Some clients come in because of what the past few years stirred up; others simply want a therapist who won’t need things explained. Both are welcome.
How long does therapy take?
That depends on what brings you in. Many clients meet weekly for several months, and we’ll revisit the pace as the work develops.
Is This For Me?
I'm not religious. Is this still for me?
Yes. For many people, being Jewish has more to do with family, history, and community than with practice, and many of my clients are entirely secular.
Do you see couples?
Yes, including interfaith and mixed-observance couples, and couples who share a background but not their politics.
Do you take insurance?
No. I’m out-of-network. Sessions are $200, and I provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement. Check your benefits in about a minute.
