SEX ADDICTION AND OUT-OF-CONTROL SEXUAL BEHAVIOR THERAPIST
JON PREZANT, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-CERTIFIED SEX AND COUPLES THERAPIST
Therapy that takes your sexual behavior seriously without reducing you to a diagnosis. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex therapist, and I work online across New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida with people whose porn use, hookups, apps, or affairs feel like they’ve gotten away from them.
Many people arrive describing it as sex addiction, and I’m comfortable using whatever language helps you. Clinically, though, I work from the out-of-control sexual behavior (OCSB) model rather than an addiction model. Instead of starting with how to stop, we start with what the behavior does for you and what you want your sexual life to look like.
What I treat: porn use that feels compulsive or secretive, repeated hookups or app use you regret, affairs or a hidden sexual life, sexual behavior that conflicts with your religious or personal values, and the cycle of shame that follows each episode. I work with men and women, gay and straight, individually and with partners after a disclosure.
I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.
WHAT CLIENTS BRING IN:
PORN YOU CAN'T SEEM TO PUT DOWN
You've deleted the apps, installed blockers, and made promises to yourself, and it keeps coming back. Rather than simply fighting the behavior, we look at what it's regulating: stress, loneliness, boredom, or shame.
WHEN IT CONFLICTS WITH YOUR VALUES
Sometimes the behavior isn't excessive by any objective standard, but it conflicts with your faith or with the person you want to be. In those cases the values conflict itself is often what we need to work on.
A LIFE YOUR PARTNER DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT
Apps, hookups, or an affair alongside a relationship you care about. Whether or not you decide to disclose, you need a place to look at it clearly, without a lecture.
AFTER THEY FOUND OUT
Disclosure or discovery upends everything at once. I work with the person whose behavior came to light, and with the couple, on what comes next, including whether there is something to rebuild.

HOW THERAPY WORKS
Do you believe sex addiction is real?
The distress is real. The label is contested: AASECT does not recognize sex addiction as a diagnosis, and the World Health Organization classifies compulsive sexual behavior as an impulse-control disorder rather than an addiction. What matters most is whether your sexual behavior fits the life you want.
Will you make me stop watching porn?
No. I don’t set rules for anyone’s sexuality. We work toward the sexual life you decide you want, and then on what has made that hard to live by.
Can I do this alongside a 12-step group?
Yes. Many clients attend groups, and we’ll talk openly about what’s helping and what isn’t.
Is This For Me?
I'm ashamed to even talk about this.
Most people are. Shame usually fuels the cycle, so reducing it is part of the treatment itself. There is very little I haven’t heard.
Is this confidential?
Yes. Sessions are private, and because I’m out-of-network, nothing is billed to an insurer unless you choose to submit a superbill yourself.
My partner wants me to go. I'm not sure I have a problem.
That’s a reasonable place to begin. Together we can work out whether this is a sexual behavior problem, a relationship problem, or a values conflict, since each calls for different work.
Where I work
NYC and all of New York State, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Florida. All sessions online.
