Couples Therapist in NYC

Jon Prezant, LCSW, MA, CST — AASECT-Certified Sex and Couples Therapist

Couples therapy that takes the sex as seriously as the conflict. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and an AASECT-certified sex therapist based in New York City. I work with couples on desire that faded, the fight that keeps repeating, agreements about monogamy and openness, and repair after broken trust – online in New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Florida.

Most couples therapy treats sex as a symptom that will clear up once the communication improves. It usually doesn’t. Sex has its own logic – arousal, shame, mismatched scripts, bodies that change over twenty years – and it needs its own attention alongside the relational work. I do both in the same room, so you aren’t sent somewhere else for half of your relationship.

What I treat: low or mismatched desire, sex that has stopped altogether, erectile difficulties and performance anxiety, pain with sex, difficulty reaching orgasm, sexual shame carried in from family or religion, broken agreements and infidelity, negotiating monogamy or openness, and the slow erosion of intimacy that happens over the course of a long relationship. My approach is direct and evidence-based – emotionally focused therapy to get at the attachment patterns driving your conflicts, psychodynamic work to surface what’s underneath, and sex therapy techniques grounded in decades of clinical research.

I hold an MSW from Yeshiva University, an MA in Trauma and Crisis Studies from Tel Aviv University, and certification in sex therapy through AASECT and the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. I live in Brooklyn with my husband and our dog, Bernie.

What Couples Bring In:

The Same Fight on Repeat

We map the cycle you're stuck in, the pursue-withdraw choreography both of you can predict but neither can stop, and the attachment needs driving it. Then we interrupt it.

Infidelity & Broken Trust

An affair discovered or confessed, and the question of what now. Structured repair: the honest accounting, the meaning underneath it, and whether and how trust gets rebuilt.

Growing Distance

Resentment with a long memory, conversations that shrank to logistics, or a partnership that became functional and quiet. Rebuilding connection is concrete work and the core of what we do.

The Sexual Relationship

Most couples therapists avoid sex because they were never trained in it. I'm an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist. Your emotional and physical disconnection get treated as what they are: the same story.

How Couples Therapy Works

Yes. Research on telehealth couples work shows outcomes comparable to in-person treatment, and many couples find hard conversations easier from their own couch. Partners can even join from separate locations. What matters is the method and the training, not the room.

It varies with what you’re bringing and what you want. Some couples do focused work in a few months; deeper repair takes longer. We set concrete goals early so progress is visible, not vague.

Yes, as part of the couples work and with clear agreements about how those sessions are handled. I use a no-secrets policy, which I’ll explain fully before we start.

Is This For Us?

Skeptical partners usually fear being ganged up on or blamed. It can help to share that my approach targets the cycle, not a culprit, and that the free consultation is a no-commitment way to meet me. Reluctant partners frequently become the most engaged ones once they see that the fight itself, not them, is the patient.

The Weekend Couples Intensive delivers months of work in a single weekend. It’s built for couples at a crossroads or couples who want concentrated momentum.

Then sex therapy may be the more precise starting point, and the free consultation sorts out which fits. Either way, nothing gets referred out; both live in this practice.
